Sciatica
Sciatica Nerve Pain
Sciatica is a symptom of an underlying medical condition and not a diagnosis, which is a common misconception. Some of the common causes of sciatic symptoms include a herniation of a lumbar disc, degenerative disc disease (D.D.D), spondylolisthesis (slippage forward of a vertebra upon another one), Piriformis syndrome, or spinal stenosis (narrowing or the spinal canal).
Sciatica is often characterized by one or more of the following symptoms:
- Pain that travels from the buttock and down the back of the leg.
- Pain that is worse with prolonged sitting.
- Posterior leg pain that is often described as a burning and tingling sensation.
- Weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the leg, foot, and/or toes.
- A sharp pain that may travel and make it difficult to stand up or walk.
Sciatic pain can vary from infrequent and irritating to constant and incapacitating to a point you have difficulties sitting or standing.
